Spartan Swimming & Diving Falls to Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Michigan State swimming & diving concluded its dual season with a pair of losses in the Canham Natatorium in Ann Arbor on Saturday, Feb. 6. The men's team fell, 173-93, while the women were downed 180-81.
"I thought we swam pretty well today and had some good splits,' said head coach Matt Gianiodis. "Brennan (LaBar) won both boards, which was exciting for him. Rachael Bukowski on the women's side had a really strong meet and was tough."
Sophomore Madison Nowak, senior Marina Borri, junior Sarah Love and sophomore Rachael Bukowski combined for third in the women's 400 medley relay with a time of 3:51.82. Senior Ian Rodriguez, junior Alec Kandt, sophomore Alex Trompke and sophomore Nick Leshok teamed up for a second-place effort, clocking a 3:19.79 in the men's race.
Kandt recorded one of the top finishes in the pool on the men's side of the afternoon, taking second in the 50 breast with a 25.86. Leshok was fourth with a time of 26.63. Junior Brennan LaBar notched the best finish overall, taking first in the 3-meter dive with a performance of 327.97. Senior Charlie Maurer was third in the event with a 262.72. Labar completed the sweep of the boards, taking first on the 1-meter with a 318.15.
Sophomore Joe Szczupakiewicz notched a second-place finish, swimming a 4:39.80 in the 500 free.
The Spartan divers continued to shine, with junior Madeline Sewell and freshman Julia Oppedisano taking second and third, respectively, in the 1-meter dive. Sewell posted a score of 275.17, while Oppedisano garnered a tally of 266.09. On the 3-meter board, Sewell took fourth with a 298.95.
Love went on to take third in the 50 fly with a time of 25.82. Freshman Emily Brunett rounded out the top five with a 25.99. Senior Jacob Moore and Freshman Gabe Whitaker raced to top-five finishes in the event, taking fourth and fifth, respectively, with a 23.08 and 23.44.
Bukowski swam to a third-place finish in the 100 free, tapping the wall in 52.37. Brunett once again rounded out the top-five, turning in a 52.67.
In the 50 back, Nowak's 26.70 stood for third, while Trompke took third in the men's race with a 22.99.
In the 800 free relay, freshman Courtney Aycock, senior Emily Parson, Brunett and sophomore Haley Kornburger swam a 7:39.81 for second.
"I think we are good right now and will be fine heading into the Big Ten Championships," Gianiodis said. "We just need to come out and compete hard."
The Spartans next dive into the pool for the Big Ten Championships. The women's championships will be contested in Ann Arbor from Feb. 17-20, while the men will travel to West Lafayette from Feb. 24-27.
