MEET NOTES
The Spartans (3-6, 1-5 B1G) take on Illinois State, Wisconsin-Stout and Western Michigan on Sunday in Normal, Ill.
Last Friday, the Spartans fell to Big Ten rival Illinois 196.300-195.575, despite garnering their highest team score of the season. MSU has improved its season-high score in each of the last two meets.
The Illinois State Redbirds are currently 2-6 and coming off of a win against conference rival, Southeast Missouri State last Friday. The last time the Spartans and the Redbirds met was Jan. 28, 2012, where MSU won, 194.400-193.625.
The Western Michigan Broncos hold a 4-4 record after losing to conference foe Central Michigan last Sunday. The last time MSU and WMU met was Feb. 21, 2014, in Kalamazoo, Mich., where the Broncos edged the Spartans 195.000-194.775.
Wisconsin-Stout gymnastics has a 1-4 record after falling to UW-Oshkosh last weekend. This is the first time the Spartans will face the Blue Devils under head coach Kathie Klages.
TEAM NOTES
MSU posted a season-high floor team score of 49.325 against Illinois, which tied for 12th in the Spartan record book. Last week's effort tied MSU's score at Eastern Michigan with Southeast Missouri State and Ohio State on March 13, 2004.
The Spartans team floor RQS, a 49.025, ranks 21st in the nation, fourth in the region and fifth in the Big Ten.
Junior Elena Lagoski is currently ranked tied for ninth in the region and tied for fourth in the conference on floor exercise, with a team-high 9.855 RQS in the event. She also has garnered a 9.755 RQS on vault, the second highest on the team behind senior Nicola Deans' 9.765. Lagoski's vault RQS ties for 23rd in the B1G.
After sharing highest honors on floor vs. Illinois with a 9.900 and placing third on bars with a career-high 9.850, Lagoski now has 11 top-three finishes on the season. Her 11 is the second-highest on the team behind senior Lisa Burt (17). Six of Lagoski's 11 top-three finishes are on floor.
Burt maintains the team's highest RQS for all-around, bars and beam: a 38.855 in all-around (11th, B1G), a 9.845 on bars to tie for ninth in the region and third in B1G, and a 9.800 on beam to rank tied for 19th in the region and 14th in the conference.
Adding to her now 76 career top-three finishes, Burt shared the crown on bars vs. Illinois, matching her season-high 9.875, previously earned vs. Penn State on Feb. 6. She also collected a 9.875 season-high on beam to place second on the event.
Matching her career-high 9.900 vs. Illinois to tie for first, junior Kira Frederick earned her fourth top-three finish of the season and 12th of her career. Eleven of the 12 finishes are on floor. She also notched a season-high 9.725 on beam.
Frederick currently has a RQS score of 9.775 on bars to tie for 21st in the conference. She also has a 9.845 on floor to rank tied for 13th in the region and tied for eighth in the conference.
Setting a career-high 9.775 on vault vs. Illinois to place third, senior Brittany Holmes collected the first individual event title on vault of her career. She also tied her career-high 9.825 on floor, set at Minnesota this season.
Freshman Drew Hendershot impressed with a career-high 9.900 vs. Illinois to share first place with teammates Frederick and Lagoski, marking the third top-three finish of her career. She has improved her floor score in each of the last three meets. Hendershot also collected a 9.725 on vault, just missing her career-high 9.750 set at Michigan.
With a RQS of 9.765, senior Nicola Deans now ranks tied for 20th in the Big Ten on vault. Her score is the highest of the Spartans in the event, just edging Lagoski's 9.755.
Posting a career-high 9.875 on bars vs. Illinois, freshman Jessica Ling shared top honors with teammate Burt to mark the second top-three finish of her career, both set on bars.
One of MSU's most consistent on beam, junior Holly Ryan, tied her career high vs. Illinois with a 9.875 to share second place with Burt. She has improved her score in the event in each of the last four meets.
Graduate student Haley Sedgewick notched a season-high 9.750 on vault vs. Illinois. She also made her debut on beam, collecting an exhibition score of 9.625.
Sophomore Hailee Westney matched her career-high 9.825 on bars vs. Illinois to place fourth overall.
Garnering a season-high team score on uneven bars with a 49.225, the Spartans swept the top five spots in the event. Freshman Jessica Ling and Burt both notched a 9.875 to share the crown on the event to mark Ling's first top finish of her career.
Next week, the Spartans will travel to Berkley, Calif., on Friday, March 4, to take on No. 14 Cal. at 10 p.m. On Sunday, March 6, MSU will close the weekend at No. 11 Boise State at 4 p.m.
