MEET NOTES
The Spartans (3-5, 1-4 B1G) host Big Ten rival Illinois (2-4, 2-3 B1G) on Friday at Jenison Field House at 7 p.m.
The meet will serve as Senior Night. The Spartans will honor Lisa Burt, Nicola Deans, Brittany Holmes, Ashley Noll, Haley Sedgewick, manager Kelsey Thomas and undergraduate student coach Kate Filosi.
The Spartans will be competing for the "Victory Plank," the commemorative trophy awarded to the annual winner between MSU and Illinois.
The Fighting Illini are currently ranked No. 6 in the conference. The last time the two teams met was Feb. 20, 2015 in Champaign, Ill., where the Illini defeated the Spartans, 196.725-194.850.
TEAM NOTES
Last Sunday, the Spartans fell to No. 3/1 Michigan, 197.225-195.425, despite garnering their highest team score of the season. MSU also posted two season-high event scores: a 48.800 on vault and a 48.825 on bars.
After posting a career-high 38.950 all-around score at Michigan, junior Elena Lagoski improved to 24th in the region, averaging a 38.431. Competing all-around four times this season, she has increased her score in each consecutive meet.
Lagoski is currently ranked 10th in the region and tied for fourth in the conference on floor exercise, averaging a team-high 9.854 in the event this year. She now has 10 top-three finishes on the season, the second-highest on the team behind senior Lisa Burt (13). Five of her 10 top three finishes are on floor.
Burt finished third in all-around at UM to mark her fifth top-three finish this season. She is averaging a team-high 39.000 in all-around competition to rank 10th in the region and 13th in the conference.
Earning the 74th top-three finish of her career, Burt notched a 9.825 on bars at UM to tie for third with teammate Hailee Westney. She also earned a 9.750 on vault, just missing her season-high 9.775.
Burt is averaging a team-high 9.833 on bars, ranking eighth in the region and tied for ninth in the Big Ten. Her 9.788 average on beam ranks 15th in the region as well as the conference.
Kira Frederick posted a season-high 9.875 on floor at Michigan. She is averaging a 9.825 in the event, the second highest on the team behind Lagoski (9.854). Frederick is now tied for 25th in the region and 14th in the Big Ten for the event.
Deans averages a team-high score in two events: 9.779 on vault (21st, BIG) and a 9.800 on beam to rank tied for 12th in the region and 13th in the conference.
With a career-high 9.825 on bars at Michigan, sophomore Hailee Westney tied for third with teammate Burt. This was Westney's first top-three finish of the season and second of her career.
Competing officially for the first time this season on vault, senior Brittany Holmes set a career-high 9.750 at UM. She also impressed with a season-high 9.775 on beam.
Garnering two career-highs at UM, freshman Drew Hendershot earned a 9.750 on vault and a 9.850 on floor to tie for third, marking her second top three finish on the season.
In her season debut on bars, sophomore Anna Gamelo earned a 9.750 at Michigan. She also posted a season-best 9.775 on vault.
Graduate student Haley Sedgewick notched an exhibition score of 9.775 on vault at Michigan, which would have been a career high.
Finishing just short of her season-high 9.775 score from the quad meet (1/30), redshirt senior Ashley Noll notched a 9.750 on beam against Michigan.
The Spartans are now ranked 25th in the nation, fifth in the region and sixth in the conference on floor exercise.
Floor proved to be the best event for MSU again last Sunday, notching a team score of 49.000 against Michigan. The Spartans' top team score of the season, a 49.225 vs. Penn State (2/6), is tied for 20th all-time in the MSU annuals.
Next week, the Spartans will travel to Normal, Ill. to take on Illinois State, Wisconsin Stout and Western Michigan on Sunday, Feb. 28, 2016 at 3 p.m.
