EAST LANSING, Michigan - The Michigan State men's and women's track and field team began the 2016-17 indoor campaign on Friday, Dec. 2 at Grand Valley State Holiday Open. The Spartans had six first place finishes to get the season underway.
"Overall I believe the meet went well. We use this competition to assess how fall training has gone. Most of our athletes are just fine tuning things. Usually top performances don't happen, but when they do it's always nice," said assistant coach Ceith Creekmur. "I thought we were represented well all around with the jumps, sprints and throws."
Sophomore Taylor Hopp took first in the 200-meter dash on a time of 25.07. Sophomores Autumn Robinson and Maya Roberts took fourth and fifth, respectively in the 200-meter. The next first place finish came in the 600-meter run when sophomore Taylor Mullins crossed the line at 1:37.92.
Junior Katelyn Daniels garnered two first place finishes in the opening meet her first in the shot put for a final throw of 14.92 meters. She also took first in the weight throw with a final throw of 19.56 meters.
On the men's side junior Antonio Clarke took first in the 300 meter dash with a time of 34.46, while freshman Zaqwon Powell finished in second for a time of 34.58.
The relay 4x400 meter relay team consisting of juniors Clarke and Alec Wiater, senior David Washington and sophomore Ryan Homick finished second behind Loyola with a time of 3:16.33. Junior Riley Norman rounded out the Spartans success with a first place finish in the weight throw. He threw a final distance of 20.16 meters.
"It was nice to kick some of the dust off. We haven't competed in a long time," said Creekmur. "I think our team is very young and I believe we show some promise. I'm looking forward to see what we can do in January to see what happens when our whole team comes together."
Michigan State will take a small break from competition, but pick back up again at Michigan on January 14, 2017. Results will be posted to msuspartans.com at the conclusion of the meet.
