
Frederick, Gamelo Named Big Ten Gymnasts to Watch

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State gymnasts Kira Frederick and Anna Gamelo have both been named as the Spartans' Gymnasts to Watch for the 2017 season, as announced by the conference office on Thursday. MSU has also been voted eighth in the Big Ten preseason coaches' poll.
Senior Kira Frederick returns to the Spartans after a successful junior campaign in which she was named to the Big Ten All-Championships Team. Frederick also qualified for NCAA Regionals, where she set a career-high 9.850 on bars.
Sophomore Anna Gamelo flourished in her freshman season in the Green and White, setting season-highs of 9.850 on the vault and 9.825 on bars. Gamelo also won the floor competition at Rutgers with a score of 9.900 and received the team's Kathryn Mahoney Award.
Michigan State will host Meet the Spartans on Sunday, Dec. 18 in Jenison Fieldhouse at 12 p.m. There will be a Gymnastics 101 session where Spartan gymnasts will perform and coaching staff will provide helpful insight into the world of gymnastics and judging standards. The Spartans officially begin the 2017 season at home on Friday, Jan. 6 when they welcome UIC for a dual meet slated to start at 7 p.m.
