
Spartans Shine on Second Day of Northwestern TYR Invitational

EAST LANSING, MICHIGAN - The Michigan State swimming & diving teams put on another solid performance on the second day of the Northwestern TYR Invitational at the Norris Aquatic Center in Evanston, Ill.
At the conclusion of the second day, the men hold a tight lead with a score of 639.5, while Northwestern is in second with a score of 633. The women's team currently sits in second with a score of 574.5 behind the host Wildcats, who have tallied 597.5.
"We had a good day today. We have had some good swims, I think we have gotten a lot accomplished. We feel pretty good about everything, and now we will just have to see what we can do tomorrow," said head coach Matt Gianiodis.
Another school record was broken today, as sophomore Catherine Armstrong swam to a first-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke on a time of 54.33.
Senior Madeline Sewell was the only other Spartan on the women's side to earn a first-place finish. Sewell won the one-meter dive with a final score of 263.40. Sophomore Julie Oppedisano took third in the event with a final score of 248.65.
Senior Sarah Love raced to a third-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly, and the 200-yard medley relay team also worked their way in to a third-place finish. Sophomores Ana Sortland, Ellie Roche, and senior Kennedy Cutler took third, fourth, and fifth respectively in the 100-yard breaststroke.
On the men's side, the team swam to a handful of top-place finishes. The team of freshmen Payton Woods, Michael Schwers, junior Alex Trompke, and senior Alex Kandt took third in the 200-yard medley.
Freshman Phillip Meffert finished second in the 400-yard IM with a finishing time of 3:57.27, defeating the third place opponent by two-tenths of a second. Junior Nick Leshok also recorded a second-place finish with the time of 56.19 in the 100-yard breaststroke.
Michigan State will resume competition at 9 a.m. ET in the Norris Aquatic Center for the final day of the Northwestern TYR Invitational.
