EAST LANSING, Michigan -- The Michigan State men's and women's swimming and diving team will round out the fall semester at the Northwestern TYR Invitational in Evanston. The Spartans will travel to the Norris Aquatics Center for three days of action, Nov. 18 -- Nov. 20, and each day will begin at 9 a.m.
"We have been building up for this weekend, it's ultimately our biggest weekend of the first semester," said head coach Matt Gianiodis. "Our goal is to have good performances. We are just looking to get best times, and have great performances."
The women's team is entering the weekend following a 155-145 victory over Bowling Green last Friday, Nov. 11, and the Spartans concluded the meet with eight first-place finishers.
Freshman Ellie Roche and junior Haley Kornburger both took two first-place finishes against the Falcons. Roche garnered her first-place finishes in the 100-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard breaststroke, while Kornburger tallied her top performances in the 1000-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle.
In their last outing, the men competed on the road at Indiana back on November 5 in the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatics Center. The Spartans fell to the Hoosiers, but picked up a pair of first-place tallies and a handful of top-three efforts.
"I feel somewhat bad for the men's team because we haven't had very many meets in the fall. The girls should be in their prime, the guys are a small step behind the women simply because they've had more racing opportunities, but I still have confidence in them, and I hope that we swim very well down there," said Gianiodis.
Senior Alec Kandt picked up one of MSU's first-place finishes in Bloomington in the 100-yard breaststroke on a time of 56.77. Senior Sam Hiller was the other Spartan to nab a first. He took first in the 200 yard backstroke, touching the pad at 1:53.40.
"This is an exciting weekend for us. We traditionally do really well down there. It is a great Big Ten town to hang out in for a few days, the facility is good, the hosts are fantastic and easy to work with. We have had some very good success down there over the years, and we are really looking forward to a good weekend," said Gianiodis.
