In the first-ever meeting between BYU and Michigan State, the Cougars defeated the Spartans, 31-14, in Spartan Stadium . . . MSU will make the return trip to Provo, Utah, in 2020.
Michigan State was held to 206 yards of total offense, the fewest by the Spartans since they had 187 in a loss at Nebraska on Oct. 29, 2011.
Saturday marked just the third non-conference home loss for the Spartans under Mark Dantonio (26-3 record; losses to Central Michigan in 2009, Notre Dame in 2012, BYU in 2016).
Josiah Price had two catches for 29 yards . . . he surpassed the 1,000-yard milestone for receiving yards on his second catch, becoming just the fourth Spartan tight end to record 1,000 career receiving yards (Chris Baker: 1,705; Mark Brammer: 1,305; Billy Joe DuPree: 1,222) . . . Price now has 80 career catches for 1,001 yards.
Junior safety Montae Nicholson recorded a career-high 17 tackles, the most by a Spartan since Eric Smith had 19 against Notre Dame on Sept. 18, 2004 . . . Chris Frey (13), Shane Jones (13) and Andrew Dowell (9) also registered career highs in tackles.
Junior quarterback Damion Terry, who played in the second half, threw for a career-high 63 yards and tied his career high with six completions . . . he finished 6-of-10 passing for 63 yards and one interception . . . Terry led the Spartans on a 10-play, 75-yard drive in the fourth quarter, capped by Terry's first career rushing touchdown, a 1-yard plunge with 4:59 left in the game . . . he also had a career-high 29 rushing yards on eight attempts.
Brandon Clemons started his first career game at defensive tackle . . . he also played on the offensive line against BYU . . . Clemons had a 1-yard tackle for loss on defense.
