MEET NOTES
The Spartans will host their second home meet of the season, a quad-meet with Rutgers, Towson and Pittsburgh on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2016 at 2 p.m. at Jenison Field House. The event is also being observed as the Autism Awareness/Alumni meet.
Last time out, the Spartans competed at Minnesota and posted a season-high team score of 195.275 and season-bests in vault (48.750), beam (48.750) and floor (49.125).
Rutgers is currently No. 50 in the national rankings and they are coming off of a loss to Nebraska. The last time the two teams met was on Feb. 27, 2015 in a quad-meet with Yale and Rutgers. The Spartans won that meet with a 196.275.
The Towson Tigers are currently ranked No. 48 in the national rankings, but have not competed in a meet since Jan. 17, 2016, due to a cancelled meet last Sunday. The last time the Spartans and the Tigers met was on Feb. 27, 2015 in a quad-meet with Yale and Pittbsburgh. The Spartans won that meet with a 196.275.
Pitt is No. 53 in the national rankings and they are coming off of an upset win over EAGL foe New Hampshire, 193.550-193.275. The last time the Spartans and the Panthers met was Feb. 15, 2015 in East Lansing, Mich., where Pitt fell to Michigan State 195.150-194.275.
TEAM NOTES
Senior Lisa Burt won the all-around against Minnesota (1/23) with a season-high score of 39.150 and also took the crown on bars, earning a 9.850 to match her season-best. She is now T-5th in the conference for bars. Burt aslo posted a season-high 9.825 on beam.
Junior Elena Lagoski shared the crown on floor against Minnesota (1/23), posting a season-high 9.900. She is now T-7th in the conference for the event.
Two freshman posted career-highs against Minnesota (1/23), including Jessica Ling who placed fourth overall on bars with a 9.775 and Roya Shirley who posted a 9.775 on vault in just her second meet competeing as a Spartan.
Sophomore Hailee Westney earned a season-high 9.675 on bars in her first official competition as a Spartan at Minnesota (1/23).
The Spartans had a pair of season-highs on floor against Minnesota (1/23), with Ashley Noll posting a 9.775 and Kira Frederick earning a 9.850.
Senior Brittany Holmes was a standout on floor against Minnesota (1/23), earning a career-high 9.825 in the event.
Sophomore Victoria Huehn competed for the first time this season at Minnesota (1/23), placing sixth overall on beam with a 9.750.
The Spartans finished last season with a 12-10 overall record and went 4-5 in Big Ten competition. MSU ranked seventh in the Big Ten and No. 26 in the nation in 2015, which was 11 places higher than they were ranked at the end of the 2014 season. MSU's RQS of 195.117 was it's best since 2010 (195.350).
The Spartans concluded the 2015 season in the NCAA Iowa State Regional, placing fourth as a No. 5 seed with a 195.375. It marked MSU's first time traveling to NCAA Regionals as a team since the 2012 season when the Spartans competed in Auburn, Alabama and scored a 194.050.
Lagoski earned a spot in the Spartan record book when she set a career best 9.950, the second-highest score in school history, on floor at Iowa (Jan. 18, 2015). She went on to match that mark two other times during the season (Feb. 15 and Feb. 27). A native of Kingston, PA, Lagoski holds ninefloor crowns and placed among the top three in 10 regular season competitions a year ago.
MSU returns five of its six Academic All-Big Ten honorees from 2015: Lisa Burt, Nicola Deans, Brittany Holmes, Ashley Noll, and Holly Ryan. In addition, Deans and Ryan were named National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women (NACGC/W) Scholar All-Americans for maintaining a GPA of 3.5 or higher during the 2014-15 academic year.
The Spartans welcome seven newcomers to the roster in 2016: five freshmen, one transfer student, and one graduate student. Sophomore Lindsey Lemke (Holt, Mich.) has recently been added to the Michigan State roster. Lemke is eligible to compete immediately, and joins the Spartans after competing at the University of North Carolina in the 2015 season. Haley Sedgewick (Flint, Mich.) is a graduate student who has also been added to the roster. She completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Pittsburgh and is currently pursuing her Masters in Communications and Media Technology at MSU.
Michigan State will stay home in East Lansing, Mich. next week for their meet against Big Ten for Penn State at Jenison Field House on Saturday, Feb. 6, 2016 at 2 p.m. The meet will also be recognized as the Jan Howard Memorial Breast Cancer Awareness Meet. Wear pink!
