Michigan State women's soccer freshman Lexy Warner received her second Big Ten Freshman of the Week award, as announced by the conference, Sept. 22.
This is the second time this month that the freshman has snagged the nomination, as she received the honor for the week of Sept. 1.
She led her team in going undefeated in league play last weekend for the first time since 2008. Warner was responsible for scoring both goals in the first B1G win of the season against Iowa in arguably the biggest game of her collegiate career thus far. Thanks to Warner, the Spartans (5-1-3, 1-0-1) gained their first home victory over Iowa since 2008.
Never leaving the field, Warner played the full 110 minutes during the double-overtime draw with Nebraska. She almost ended the game for the Spartans with a shot that landed just wide of the Husker net at the end of the first overtime period.
As a true freshman, Warner has started all nine of the Spartans' games. With eight points, three goals, and two assists, she leads the team in points and goals. The freshman is tied for second on the team with assists (2) and third in shots on goal (5). She is third in shots (17) with one game-winning goal to her credit.
Head coach Tom Saxton said that Warner's attitude sets her apart.
"First of all, scoring big goals isn't even what we were counting on from her. We saw her more as someone who could get down on the wing and set up other players," Saxton said. "But the way she scraps in the box and her ability to find the ball and put it in the back of the net, I think, is a big bonus for us. Her willingness to do whatever it is for the team makes her so special. She's a great player and a great athlete, but her attitude of doing whatever she needs to do for the team just sets her apart."
