Lappin, Netzel and Weatherhead Named Big Ten Golfers to Watch

EAST LANSING, Michgan â€" Michigan State juniors Gareth Lappin, Charlie Netzel and Sam Weatherhead have been named Big Ten Golfers to Watch for the 2015-16 season, the conference office announced on Wednesday.
Lappin, who hails from Belfast, Northern Ireland, had a scoring average of 74.22, which was third on the team. He had five top-20 finishes in 2014-15 and finished t-12th in the Gopher Invitational. Lappin played in 12 tournaments for the Spartans as a sophomore and shot a season-low 69 in the first round of the Quail Valley Collegiate.
Netzel, who is a native of Ann Arbor, Michigan, played in all 12 tournaments for the Spartans. He ended the season with a 74.27 scoring average. He had two top-five finishes and one top 20 finish as a sophomore. He shot a season-low 68 at the Colleton River Collegiate.
Weatherhead, a native of Grand Rapids, Michigan, led the Spartans with a 73.56 scoring average. He had a breakout sophomore campaign, capturing the Colleton River Collegiate title. He added one other top-10 finish and four top-20 finished for MSU last season. His season low was a 69 at both the Inverness Intercollegiate and the Rod Myers Invitational.
The Michigan State men's golf team opens the season Sept. 13-14 with the Gopher Invitational in Independence, Minn.
