Spartans Post Second Straight Sweep, Down New Hampshire

SPARTAN SYNOPSIS
Michigan State (5-3) won its second straight, a 3-0 victory over host New Hampshire (25-23, 25-8, 25-15) at the Wildcats' Holly Young Invitational. UNH drops its second straight and falls to 6-4 on the year.
- SET ONE: Tied at 7-7. the Spartans went on a 5-1 run to put some separation between themselves and their hosts. An 8-2 run, capped by back-to-back service aces, gave UNH a 20-18 advantage, and after a Garvelink kill, the Spartans committed back-to-back errors to fall down by three, 22-19. MSU got kills on three of the next four balls to regain the lead at 23-22, and a block by Garvelink got the Spartans to set point.
- SET TWO: MSU got out on their hosts early, 15-4, as the twin towers of Kranda and Garvelink continued to cause problems for New Hampshire. The Spartans opened the set hitting .556 (10-0-18), and finished at .484 (15-1-30). Kranda had five kills and a pair of blocks in the frame, and libero Abby Monson had six digs.
- SET THREE: New Hampshire tried to get out in front early, posting a 3-0 early advantage, but the Spartans were awakened with a 12-5 run, forcing the Wildcats into a timeout. with a 16-10 edge, the Spartans finished off a long rally, and finished off the match on a 9-5 run to seal the three-set victory.

"Every game we're seeing some more progression and improvement, which is important. As we inch closer to conference play, the more important it is for that improvement and cohesion to come together. It has been a bit of a challenging road so far with the injuries, but we continue to see the benefits from the depth and versatility we built last year."

TOP PERFORMERS
- Alyssa Garvelink and Brooke Kranda shared the match lead of 14 kills, as Garvelink hit .478 and Kranda .364. They had two and three blocks, respectively.
- Rachel Minarick had her third double-double of the season, getting 17 assists and 10 digs to go along with six kills and hitting .400.
- Fellow setter Halle Peterson also had a double-double, her first of the season, by posting 14 assists and recording 11 digs.
STATS AND STORYLINES
- The Spartans' 25-9 win in the second set was the largest margin of victory this season.
- UNH hit just .084, the second straight opponent that MSU has held under 10% this weekend. Boston College hit .073 on Friday.
- MSU's 58 digs was the most in a three-set match this season. Monson had a season-best 14 digs, bettering the 11 she had vs. Boston College - her first match of her career wearing the libero jersey.
- MSU completes the Holly Young Invitational Saturday at 4:30 p.m. vs. Delaware.
