EAST LANSING, Mich. - After making it to the national semifinals of the NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Doubles Championship, Harry Jadun and John Patrick Mullane knew this announcement was coming.
Still, it doesn't diminish the importance of being named the second and third All-Americans in MSU men's tennis history after the ITA announced the All-American teams on Thursday. Mashiska Washington was the first in program history after being named an All-American in singles in 1994.
"It's a great accomplishment for the program," head coach Gene Orlando said. "The guys worked hard and it's a great feat and honor to be an All-American."
Jadun and Mullane finished with an overall record of 21-5, including 8-1 in the Big Ten and 10 wins over ranked opponents.
"We're just living in the moment and taking it one match at a time," Jadun said after advancing to the semifinals.
The Spartan duo knocked off the No. 2 doubles pair of Luca Corintelli and Shane Ryan of Virginia in the first round, 6-1, 6-7 (4-7), 7-5. Oliver Pramming and Justin Roberts, the No. 28 doubles pair of South Florida, were the next victims, and were defeated 7-6 (7-0), 6-4 by the Spartans. The win over the South Florida pair clinched All-American status for Jadun and Mullane.
"When I started playing at MSU, my dream school, I had two goals: to play No. 1 singles, and to be an All-American," Mullane said. "This completes the dream; it's a dream come true."
The Michigan State duo wasn't done yet, though. They went on to defeat LSU's No 14 pair of Boris Arias and Jordan Daigle, 6-3, 6-4. Texas Tech's No. 22 pair of Hugo Dojas and Felipe Soares finally defeated the Spartans in the national semifinals.
Spartans in the Rankings The final ITA rankings were released on Thursday, with Jadun and Mullane finishing No. 16 in the nation. Mac Roy and Michael Dube also made an appearance, at No. 88.
