WACO, Texas - A couple rain delays couldn't stop Harry Jadun and John Patrick Mullane from rolling through the second round of the NCAA Tournament and into the quarterfinals.
The Spartans defeated the No. 28 doubles team from South Florida, Oliver Prammer and Justin Roberts in straight sets, 7-6 (7-0), 6-4.
"They're a fantastic team to make it this far," Mullane said. "We said we can live with ourselves no matter what the outcome as long as we do the right things."
The pair from Michigan State started strong, winning the first three games of the match, but Prammer and Roberts weren't going to give up so easy.
"I just told Harry to trust me," Mullane said. "I was able to get us out of a jam, then when he held serve he brought it home."
It was the seventh-consecutive doubles victory for Jadun and Mullane, and their ninth win over a ranked opponent.
"It's important to be fresh, and not put pressure on yourself at this level," head coach Gene Orlando said. "They're just going out there and playing - they're not forcing anything. To get to this point you have to force it, to punch your ticket. But now you just have to go out there and play."
Jadun and Mullane (18-5, 7-1) came into the NCAA Division I Men's Doubles Championships ranked No. 18 in the country. No matter what happens from here on out, reaching the quarterfinals means they will leave as All-Americans.
"It's been 21 years since we had our last All-American," Orlando said. "The last two days have been like no other. We're just going to keep it going."
Jadun and Mullane become Michigan State's first All-Americans in doubles, and only the second and third All-Americans in the program's history. The first All-American was Mashiska Washington in 1994.
For Mullane, the achievement has special meaning.
"When I started playing at MSU, my dream school, I had two goals: to play No. 1 singles, and to be an All-American," Mullane said. "This completes the dream; it's a dream come true."
The Spartans will take on LSU's No. 14 pair of Boris Arias and Jordan Daigle tomorrow at 3 p.m. ET.
"No matter what, no matter how we sleep or eat, all the other stuff melts away when we step on to that court," Jadun said. "We just go out there and leave it all on the court."
