Michigan State has its closest "road trip" of the season, racing just over an hour away from the MSU campus on Belleville Lake. Saturday's racing lines up the Spartans against both Iowa and Indiana in a Big Ten double-dual format, as host Michigan also faces off against the Hoosiers and Hawkeyes in a day full of racing.
MSU will face its first Conference competition of the season - MSU has not yet raced any Big Ten crews, but did compete two weeks ago on Ohio State's home course against Notre Dame and Louisville. This week, MSU competes at Michigan, but will not line up head-to-head with the Wolverines until April 25 in Columbus, where the Spartans will also race Syracuse.
MSU did not face either Indiana or Iowa in a dual meet in 2014, but the Spartans finished one spot behind the NCAA-qualifying Hoosiers at the Big Ten Championships in Indianapolis last May, and was two spots ahead of Iowa. MSU last raced Indiana in a dual in 2013 and Iowa in 2012 - the Spartans won both duals.
For Big Ten racing, a point system is used to determine a dual-meet winner. Points are awarded in each boat class (both varsity eights, varsity fours, and novice eights) to determine a winner. In addition, Michigan and Iowa will each field third varsity fours for this weekend, and will race one another in both sessions.
Racing will begin at 9 am on Saturday morning, with the second novice eights from MSU and Iowa. Racing will be held on 12-minute centers, alternating between MSU/Iowa and Michigan/Indiana in the morning session, through varsity eight racing at 11:12 and 11:24. In the afternoon session, MSU and Indiana begin the racing at 1 p.m., with an identical alternating format through the varsity eight races at 3:12 and 3:24 pm.
