Spartans' Win Streak Snapped in Series Opener at Indiana

BLOOMINGTON, Indiana - Indiana used six unanswered runs to defeat the Michigan State baseball team, 6-1, in the opening game of the weekend series between the teams on Friday night at Kaufman Stadium in Bloomington, Ind. The loss halted MSU's four-game winning streak as the Spartans are now 23-17 overall and 7-6 in the Big Ten.

The Hoosiers (23-15, 6-8) limited the Spartans to just five hits, while putting up 15 of their own.

MSU starter Cam Vieaux allowed five runs on 13 hits in 6.1 innings to take the loss.

Ryan Krill provided what proved to be the Spartans' lone run of the game when he hit his sixth homer of the season in the top of the first inning, turning around a pitch from IU starter Kyle Hart and sending it over the right field wall.

Indiana countered in the bottom of the first on a two-out RBI double by Logan Sowers to knot the game.

Brad Hartong, who went 3-for-5, gave IU a 2-1 lead with his first of three RBIs in the game on a single to center field in the bottom of the third inning.

The Spartans stranded a pair of runners on base in the third and fourth innings and the Hoosiers took advantage to add to their lead on a Will Nolden RBI single in the bottom of the fourth.

Two runs in the seventh upped the IU lead to 5-1. Hartong closed the scoring with a two-out RBI double in the eighth to make it 6-1.

Three of the Spartans' five hits in the game came off Hart, who was replaced by Scott Effross with two outs in the third inning. Effross threw the next 4.1 innings, limiting the Spartans to just one hit in picking up the win.

Walter Borkovich (0.2 innings) and Joe Mockbee (one inning) closed the game on the mound for the Spartans.

The Spartans and Hoosiers will continue the series at 2:05 p.m. on Saturday.
