SERIES NOTES
Michigan State will travel to Ames, Iowa to compete at Iowa State Region in the 2015 NCAA Regional Championships.
MSU is among the 36 schools selected to compete at regionals and enters the postseason as the No. 5 seed in the Iowa State Region along with LSU, Nebraska, Denver, Washington and Iowa State. This marks the Spartans' 22nd overall team appearance in an NCAA Regional and 16th under head coach Kathie Klages.
The top 18 teams are seeded on a national basis, based on RQS. Teams 19-36 are organized into three pods (19-24, 25-30 and 31-36) and placed geographically at each of the six sites, beginning with teams 19-24 followed by teams 25-30 and then finally teams 31-36. All-around competitors and event specialists are assigned to their respective geographic region or the designated site for their region.
This marks MSU's first time traveling to Regionals as a team since the 2012 season when the Spartans competed in Auburn, Alabama and scored a 194.050.
TEAM NOTES
The Spartans rank 28th in the country with a 195.710 regional qualifying score. Floor has proven to be the most consistent event for the Spartans, who have tallied a 49.235 RQS and rank 16th in the nation and third in the conference as a team.
Michigan State has only seen one team in the Iowa State Region during the 2015 regular season. The Spartans fell to Nebraska 196.000-195.250 at the inaugural Big Five Meet held in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Junior Lisa Burt and sophomore Elena Lagoski were both named First Team All-Big Ten, as announced by the Conference. This is the first time MSU has had two gymnasts named First Team All-Big Ten since the 2007-08 season.
Burt leads the Spartans in all-around competition this season, ranking 23rd in the nation with a 39.345 RQS. Burt has five all-around crowns on the season, alongside nine additional event wins. Burt has been ranked in the top 25 nationally all-around throughout the entire 2015 season.
Lagoski earned a spot in the Spartan record book when she set a career best 9.950, the second-highest score in school history, on floor at Iowa (Jan. 18). She went on to match that mark twice more this season (Feb. 15 and Feb. 27). A native of Kingston, PA, Lagoski holds eight floor crowns and has placed among the top three in 10 of the 11 regular season competitions.
The Spartans finished the 2015 regular season with a 12-10 overall record, ranking seventh in the Big Ten with a 4-5 conference record.
Michigan State is coming off of an eighth-place finish at the 2015 Big Ten Championships in Ann Arbor, Michigan where they tallied a 195.650 as a team.
The Spartans made a presence in the post-meet ceremony at the Big Ten Championships as Lagoski and sophomore Kira Frederick were named to the 2015 All-Championships Team, both scoring a 9.900 on floor. Freshman Anna Gamelo earned the Sportsmanship Award.
While not qualifying as a team, three individual gymnasts represented Michigan State at the 2014 NCAA Regional Championships last March, competing at the Maravich Center on the campus of LSU. Alina Cartwright and Lisa Burt placed fifth and seventh in the all-around, while Elena Lagoski finished ninth on floor exercise.
Klages is in her 25th season as head coach of the MSU gymnastics program. She is the longest-tenured head coach in the athletic department. The Spartans welcomed assistant coach/recruiting coordinator Mike Rowe to the program this season after coaching nine years at the University of Pittsburgh. Both Rowe and assistant coach Nicole Curler are MSU alumni.
Michigan State will need to place either first or second in their region to advance into the NCAA National Championships. National Championships will be held in Fort Worth, Texas from April 17-19.
