Women's Tennis Extinguishes Flames

March 6, 2015 EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team improved 10-2 on the season on Friday afternoon. The Spartans defeated Illinois-Chicago, 7-0. Michigan State improved to 8-1 at home in 2015.
"I feel that today was a real confidence booster," said head coach Simone Jardim. "I think it was good for the girls' confidence to see that even if they have an off day they can still win. I am happy that we finished the night winning all the matches."
The Spartans started the afternoon by taking the doubles point from the Flames. The team of freshman Allie Baer and senior Catherine Parenteau had no problem with Bianca Zuzu and Melika LeBlanc. The duo was victorious at No. 2 doubles, 8-1. The sophomore duo of Erin Faulkner and Athena Trouillot was victorious at No. 1 doubles, defeating Keti Mubuke and Oana Manole, 8-4. The team of freshman Lexi Baylis and Emily Meyers led before the match was called, 7-6.
Lexi Baylis improved to 23-3 on the year in singles play with a victory at No. 2 singles. Baylis made quick work of Jackie Altansarni winning, 6-1, 6-0.
Emily Meyers earned the victory at No. 5 singles, defeating Bianca Zuzu, 6-2, 6-4. Meyers is now 15-7 in singles play this season.
At No. 6 singles, Allie Baer earned the victory over Melika LeBlanc, 7-5, 6-0. Baer improved to 6-4 in singles play on the year.
Athena Trouillot improved to 16-8 in singles play on the year. Trouillot defeated Ann-Sophie Hahn at No. 4 singles, 6-4, 6-3.
Freshman Aslina Chua defeated Oana Manole won in a three-set tiebreaker. Chua won 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (10-6). Chua is now 15-7 in singles on the year.
Erin Faulkner finished the night winning a thriller in three sets. Faulkner defeated Keti Mebuke, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2. Faulkner is now 14-9 in singles.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday as they travel to Connecticut to face the Huskies at 1:15 p.m. at the East Hartford Tennis Club.
