EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State gymnastics fell on the road at Penn State by a score of 197.025-193.425 in the fourth Big Ten competition of the season. The Spartans move to 5-3 overall, 2-2 in the Big Ten.
"We were extremely disappointed in the outcome of the competition today," said head coach Kathie Klages. "We did not get the job done."
Spartans took to bars in the first rotation of the day and were led by junior Lisa Burt who scored a 9.875 for a second-place finish. Sophomore Mackenzie Smith followed Burt, scoring a 9.825 and tied for a fifth. Sophomore Kira Frederick marked a career-high 9.800 and tied for eighth. As a team, the Spartans scored a 47.975.
Moving to vault, sophomore Elena Lagoski tied her career-high 9.875, tying for second. Junior Nicola Deans marked a fifth-place finish with a 9.825. Burt followed Deans, scoring a 9.800 and placing sixth. Michigan State scored a 48.800 as a team on vault.
Lagoski led the Spartans on floor, scoring a 9.900 and tying for first. Burt and Frederick both notched a 9.800 and tied for seventh. Competing on floor for the third time this season, sophomore Holly Ryan recorded a 9.625 for the Spartans. As a team, MSU scored a 48.700 on floor.
In the final rotation of the day, the Spartans scored a 47.950 on beam. Freshman Victoria Huehn and Burt tied for fifth place by scoring a 9.800, a career high for Huehn. Junior Brittany Holmes placed ninth with a season-high 9.775, and freshman Anna Gamelo competed on beam for her first time as a Spartan, posting a 9.300 for a 10th-place finish.
Burt placed fourth in all-around competition, scoring a 39.275 for the Spartans. Gamelo competed all-around for the first time in her collegiate career, earning a 38.050 to finish sixth.
MSU will return home on Friday, Feb. 13 to compete against in-state rival Michigan. This meet will serve as the annual alumni meet. All alumni are asked to contact Nicole Curler (curlerni@ath.msu. edu) if interested in participating. Just two days later (Feb. 15) the Spartans will host Pittsburgh in the annual Autism Awareness Meet. Both meets will take place at Jenison Fieldhouse.
"We have two home meets coming up next weekend and we have the opportunity to get back on track!" said Klages. "We are anxious to see how this team responds!"
