Spartans Finish Strong at Big Ten Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Michigan State women's swimming & diving team concluded action at the 2015 Big Ten Championships on Saturday. The Spartans finished in 13th place with 65 points. The day was highlighted by junior Elizabeth Brown breaking the school record in the 200 butterfly twice.
"I am really happy for our seniors," said head coach Matt Gianiodis. "They really worked hard this week and they had some really good times. I am really proud of Elizabeth Brown breaking the school record. I think we laid a good ground work for next season, we broke five school records this year and hopefully we can use that for momentum for 2016."
Brown broke the school record in the 200 butterfly in the preliminary round on Saturday morning. Brown posted a time of 2:00.16 which was the 18th fastest time in qualifying. Senior Hannah Pugh finished in 23rd in qualifying with a time of 2:01.33. The consolation bonus saw the school record fall again as Brown posted a time of 1:59.55 to take 19th and Pugh posted the third-fastest time in school history at 2:00.43, finishing 21st. Freshman Rebecca Hannon posted her fastest time at Michigan State at 2:05.46 to finish 42nd. Freshman Haley Kornburger claimed a time of 2:09.40 and freshman Kara Dean finished at 2:13.23.
In the 200 breaststroke, junior Marina Borri posted Michigan State's fastest time in 35th place at 2:18.71. Freshman Mia Baric finished in 45th at 2:22.42. In 46th place was freshman Anna Stephens, posting her fastest time of the year at 2:23.24.
Sophomore Sarah Love posted the 10th-fastest time in school history in the 100 freestyle, touching the wall at 51.51. Senior Shelby Lacy finished in 75th at 51.69. Sophomore Kennedy Cutler broke her career-best time with at 79th place finish at 51.93.
Junior Nicole Huffman recorded the ninth-fastest time in school history in the 200 backstroke. Huffman finished 48th with a time of 2:02.69. Sophomore Lauren Kalwasinski improved her best time by more than two seconds, taking 54th at 2:04.49. Freshman Madison Nowak also posted a career-best time at Michigan State, finishing in 56th place at 2:05.82.
The Spartans finished the night in the 400 freestyle relay; the team of Sarah Love, Kennedy Cutler, junior Emily Parsons, and Shelby Lacy finished in 13th at 3:23.33, the fastest time of the year.
The men's team competes at the Big Ten Championships in Iowa City, Iowa, next week Wednesday through Saturday.
