EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State wrestling team fell to Duke, 19-13, Friday night at Jenison Field House. The Spartans won the final three matches of the dual, but it wasn't enough to rally past the Blue Devils.
John Rizqallah won his third straight match with a 6-2 decision over Jacob Kasper at 184 pounds, while Nick McDiarmid extended his winning streak to four with a dominating 12-1 major decision against Spencer Neff at 197. Chris Nash closed the dual at heavyweight with an 8-2 victory over Brendan Walsh.
"What you probably didn't see is that a majority of our team has been fighting the flu, so you're not only fighting a tough opponent, but you're fighting some physical adversity as well," said MSU head coach Tom Minkel. "It was a real struggle for us, we got hit pretty hard this week. That said, I thought the effort was there, but there were some places where we just didn't have any power. At the same time, Duke wrestled us well and they were certainly deserving of what they got today."
Mitch Rogaliner got things started for MSU (5-12) with a 10-7 win over Thayer Atkins at 125 pounds. Rogaliner fell behind early in the first, but bounced back with an escape, takedown and two near-fall points to take a 5-2 lead into the second period. He extended his lead to 8-3 with another escape and takedown in the second, and tallied three more points in the third to record the 10-7 decision.
Duke (11-6) then rattled off six consecutive wins to take a commanding 19-3 lead before the Spartans rallied to claim the final three bouts.
The pivotal match proved to be at 174 pounds, as Nick Proctor battled Trey Adamson into overtime. After a scoreless first period, Proctor gave up an escape to start the second but came back with a takedown with 29 seconds left. He couldn't keep Adamson down, however, and allowed another escape point to make the match 2-2 heading into the third period.
Proctor quickly escaped eight seconds into the final stanza to go up 3-2. Adamson had a takedown called off with just 50 seconds remaining after a challenge overturned the initial call, but he produced another takedown with 37 seconds left to take a 4-3 lead. Proctor managed to escape 22 seconds later to send the match into overtime.
In sudden victory, Proctor appeared to record an early takedown, but he wasn't awarded the two points, and Adamson bounced back and got Proctor on the edge of the mat for the takedown and the 6-4 victory.
Rizqallah turned things around for the Spartans with his 6-2 decision over Kasper, who entered the dual with a 23-7 record. Rizqallah was in command the entire match and exited the platform with 2:28 of riding time.
McDiarmid continued his winning ways with his 12-1 major decision over Spencer Neff, who was a late replacement for seventh-ranked Conner Hartmann. McDiarmid recorded three takedowns, a reversal and three near-fall points, and added two minutes of riding time to come away with the 11-point victory.
"John has gone to another level, as has McDiarmid," said Minkel. "Both of them are wrestling as well as they've ever wrestled. And that's what you want as you get into the second semester of your senior year. Both of them have taken real strides in the right direction."
In a match that featured several injury timeouts, Nash held off Walsh, 8-2, at heavyweight, including a last-second takedown. Nash also had 1:15 of riding time in winning his third match in row.
Michigan State returns to action Saturday to face Central Michigan on Senior Night in Jenison Field House at 7 p.m.
"We've got 24 hours to get ready - we can't feel sorry for ourselves," said Minkel. "We have to get rehydrated and get a good night's sleep, and we'll come in tomorrow and get ready for the next dual. The intensity of the dual against Central is always very high. We'll have to wrestle hard; we're looking forward to it. We'll have to regroup from this one and get back after it tomorrow."
