COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Michigan State women's swimming & diving team broke a school record at the 2015 Big Ten Championships on Wednesday night at Ohio State. The only two events of the evening were the 200 medley relay and the 800 freestyle relay.
"I am really proud of the girls," said head coach Matt Gianiodis. "Well I am really proud of Maddie (Nowak), we were in the strong heat and starting off as a freshman isn't easy. She did a really amazing job starting off for us. The 800 relay also did well too. They swam one of the fastest times in school history."
The team of freshman Madison Nowak, senior Shelby Lacy, sophomore Sarah Love, and junior Emily Parsons broke the school record in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:41.12. The team from Wisconsin took first at 1:36.82. The school record stood at 1:41.56 since 2009.
In the 800 freestyle relay, the team of senior Hannah Pugh, Emily Parsons, sophomore Kennedy Cutler, and freshman Haley Kornburger, finished in 7:25.16. The Hoosiers from Indiana took first, touching the wall at 6:59.10, a new Big Ten record.
The Spartans currently stand in 13th place with 16 points. Michigan State returns back to action on Thursday. Trails are set to begin at 11 a.m. at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
