EAST LANSING, Mich.-- The Spartan gymnastics team gave their fans a sneak peak of what is to come in the 2015-16 season, welcoming fans to their Green and White meet on Sunday (Nov. 21). MSU welcomes four new gymnasts this season and coach Kathie Klages looks forward to a special season.
"It was great to get this team in front of judges and our Spartan fans this early," Klages said. "This competition allows the gymnasts to remember what it feels like to perform for a crowd. Nerves are always an issue in our sport, and this event helps them to learn how to deal with them."
The meet featured Elena Lagoski's debut competition on the bars, and all six competitors in the lineup had successful beam routines.
The floor event, choreographed by assistant coach Nicole Curler, was a bright spot for the Spartans, which was their only 49 event total.
Senior Lisa Burt was also a standout in the meet, placing first in bars and beam, and received all-around recognition.
"All in all, I believe the team did a very good job," Klages said. "I look forward to an outstanding season in 2016."
The Spartans are coming off of 2015 campaign where they finished 12-10 overall and 4-5 in Big Ten competition. They concluded last season at the 2015 NCAA Regional at Iowa State, placing fourth as a No. 5 seed with a 195.375. The Spartans finished the season seventh in the Big Ten and ranked 26th in the country with a 195.710 regional qualifying score.
The Spartans will host a Meet the Spartans event at Jenison Field House on Sunday, Jan. 3 in East Lansing and the home opener is Friday, Jan. 15 against Iowa.
