BENTON HARBOR, Mich. - In the first year of holding the Fossum Memorial at legendary Point O'Woods Country Club and Golf Course, the Michigan State men's golf team had a record-setting day, standing in first place after 36 holes.
After 36 holes, the Spartans lead with a 22-under 554 (279-275), which was its lowest score after 36 holes this season. Cincinnati is in second place with a 4-under 572 (285-287). Michigan State's "B" squad is in third place with 16-over 592 (297-295). Nebraska is in fourth with a 22-over 598 (299-299).
The Spartans' 36-hole score of 554 is the lowest in Fossum Memorial history. This is the first time that the Fossum/Spartan Memorial has been held at Point O'Woods Golf Course after being held on MSU's campus course, the Forest Akers West Golf Course from 1966-2011. The tournament was renamed in 1992 in honor of Bruce Fossum, longtime Spartan coach and teacher. The previous two-round low was Michigan State in 2007 when MSU shot a 563 (279-284).
Junior Sam Weatherhead had a career day on Monday. He is in first place with an 11-under 133 (68-65), which is a 36-hole Fossum Memorial record. The previous two-round record was 135 by Cam Burke of Eastern Michigan in 2007. His second-round 65 was the lowest of any Spartan in the Fossum Memorial. The lowest single round was 64 by three players. Weatherhead set career highs in both rounds as his career-low was 69.
Senior Josh Heinze is in third place with a 6-under 138 (68-70). This is the second-straight week that Heinze has earned 68 with an identical mark at The Jackrabbit last week. Junior Mitch Rutledge is in fourth with a 5-under 139 (70-69).
Juniors Charlie Green and Charlie Netzel are tied for eighth with identical scores of 144 (73-71). Green was the top player for the Michigan State "B" team. Junior Gareth Lappin rounded out the MSU lineup, standing in 17th with a 9-over 153 (77-76).
For the Michigan State "B" team, sophomore Michael Sharp is 11th with a 1-over 145 (74-71), while fellow sophomore A.J. Varekois carded a 2-over 146 (71-75). Freshman Glenn Piot and redshirt junior Sean Friel were tied for 20th with a 13-over 157 (79-78). Redshirt junior Gates Muller rounds out the Michigan State "B" with a 27-over 171 (90-81)
