SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Michigan State swimming & diving suffered a pair of losses at Notre Dame on Friday at the Rolfs Aquatics Center. The men's team fell to the Fighting Irish, 174-69, while the women stumbled 158-80.
"I though the effort was there, but we just did not get the results," said head coach Matt Gianiodis. "It was a tougher week of practice, but we need to see more results. Haley Kornburger had a great meet though, along with Emily Parsons and Mitch Strahlman. We shuffled some people around in different events and I though they responded well to it."
Sophomore Haley Kornburger notched a pair of second-place finishes in the distance events. Kornburger tapped the wall in 10:31.86 in the 1,000-yard free and followed the performance with a 5:07.33 in the 500 free.
On the men's side, sophomore Joe Szczupakiewicz won the 500-yard free with a time of 4:38.23. Szczupakiewicz etched fourth earlier in the meet, swimming the 1,000 free in 9:37.28.
Sophomore Mitch Strahlman found success in South Bend, pacing the Spartans in the 400 IM and 200-yard fly. Strahlman touched the wall in 4:03.62 in the 400 IM before completing the 200 fly with a time of 1:53.16.
On the boards, junior Madeline Sewell followed her Big Ten Diver of the Week honor with a pair of second-place efforts. Sewell recorded a score of 283.13 on the 1-meter board, while she posted a mark of 283.05 on the 3 meter. Senior Charles Maurer led the men's team in the dives, taking second in the 1 meter with a 309.90 and third on the 3-meter board with a 299.47 in his season debut.
Junior Alec Kandt posted a late first-place effort for MSU in the 200 breaststroke. Kandt beat out the field with a time of 2:06.36.
Senior Emily Parsons had a strong showing in her farewell appearance at the Rolfs Aquatics Center, finishing third in the 100 free and fourth in the 200 free. Parsons paced the Spartans in the 100 with a 52.79, which was precursored by a 1:55.16 in the 200.
Michigan State's women's program returns to action on Nov. 6 at Toledo, while the men dive back into the pool on Nov. 13 in East Lansing.
