
Women's Swimming & Diving Sinks In-State Rival

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Michigan State swimming & diving teams split with the Oakland Golden Grizzlies on Saturday afternoon. The women's team beat the Golden Grizzlies, 186-108. The Spartan women team now holds a 5-7 record on the year. The men's team fell short at Oakland, 148.5-145.5. The Spartan men are now 4-5 on the year.
"I think that we did really well today," said head coach Matt Gianiodis. "I think that our women swam great, our divers did great, and our kids did really well. We just got outtouched on the men's side."
The Spartans wasted no time getting started on Saturday; the women's team started the day winning the 200 medley relay. The team of freshman Madison Nowak, senior Shelby Lacy, sophomore Sarah Love, and junior Emily Parsons finished with a winning time of 1:44.50.
The MSU women finished with the two fastest times in the 1000 freestyle. Senior Becca Berman recorded the fastest time of the day with a 10:27.55 finish. Junior Chelsea Abbott finished in second at 10:30.88.
Senior Hannah Pugh recorded her fastest time of the season in the 200 freestyle. Pugh finished second at 1:54.20. Freshman Haley Kornburger finished in third at 1:54.82. Madison Nowak posted her fastest time at MSU in the 100 backstroke on Saturday. Nowak finished in first, clocking in at 56.78.
In the men's 100 backstroke, freshman Alex Trompke won with a time of 50.00. Sophomore Adam Marsh finished in third at 51.16, his fastest time of the season.
Michigan State tallied a pair of second-place finishes in the 100 breaststroke. Shelby Lacy finished second on the women's side at 1:05.05. Sophomore Alec Kandt clocked in at 56.46, to finish second on the men's side.
In the women's 200 butterfly, MSU grabbed the two fastest times. Junior Elizabeth Brown won with a time of 2:01.93. Hannah Pugh finished in second at 2:04.86. Brown was also victorious in the 100 butterfly where she recorded a time of 56.45, Sarah Love finished in second at 57.48.
"Lizzy did great today," said Gianiodis. "She is really starting to come into her own. She is really exciting to watch race."
The Spartans swept the women's 50 freestyle. Sarah Love was victorious with a 24.42 finish. Freshman Rachael Bukowski finished second at 24.60, Emily Parsons in third at 25.65, and Freshman Macy Moore in fourth at 24.90.
Haley Kornburger earned a first place finish in the women's 500 freestyle; she finished with a time of 5:08.01. Chelsea Abbott followed behind in second, recording a time of 5:09.03.
Sophomore Brennan LaBar won the men's 1-meter diving event with a score of 305.99. Oakland didn't field any divers in the women's competition. Senior Cristee Cordes had the highest score in the women's 1 -meter at 283.72. Sophomore Madeline Sewell recorded the highest score in the women's 3-meter at 321.00.
Elizabeth Brown recorded her third individual victory of the day in the women's 200 IM. The Spartans took the top three times in the event. Brown led with a time of 2:06.77, sophomore Kennedy Cutler in second at 2:08.78, and freshman Mia Baric took third at 2:11.53.
The Spartans swept the men's 200 IM. Junior Nate Weeks won the event with a 1.52.78 finish. Freshman Tal Hanani finished in second at 1:55.28, freshman Connor Lamb in third at 1:55.65, and junior Ian Rodriguez in fourth at 1:55.69.
The MSU men took first place in the final event of the afternoon in the 400 freestyle relay, with a time of 3:02.53. But it was not enough to defeat Oakland.
The women's team returns to action on Saturday as they travel to Illinois to face the Fighting Illini. The men's team will finish their dual meet season on Feb. 7, as they host Michigan on senior day.
