GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Spartans had a strong day at the 2014 AT&T Winter Nationals. Michigan State saw the women's 100 breaststroke school record fall once again this season as senior Shelby Lacy advanced to the finals on Friday in Greensboro.
"Today was spectacular," said associate head coach Kathleen Milloy. "Alex Trompke turned it around, Shelby Lacy broke the school record, and Hannah Pugh had one of her fastest times at Michigan State."
Lacy broke the school record again in the women's 100 breaststroke. In the morning preliminary round, she set a new school record of 1:02.07. She had set a new school record a few weeks ago at Northwestern of 1:02.14. In the evening session, Lacy finished with a time of 1:03.06
"Shelby is a great example of the product of staying four years," said Milloy. "She has really grown up here in her four years at Michigan State. She has taken the reigns, she is very detail oriented and it's really like watching a professional swim."
Freshman Alex Trompke competed in two events on Friday morning. He recorded a personal record in the 100 backstroke, finishing with a time of 49.38. That time is the fifth-fastest time in school history. Trompke also recorded a time of 49.14 in the 100 butterfly.
Senior Hannah Pugh raced in the 400 IM on Friday morning. She finished with a time of 4:22.31. Pugh is scheduled to swim the 200 butterfly on Saturday. The Spartans wrap-up the semester tomorrow as Pugh will compete at the Greensboro Aquatics Complex. Fans can follow the meet that will be streamed live on usaswimming.org/nationals.
