EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's swimming and diving team returns to East Lansing as it takes on the Rockets of Toledo this Friday, Nov. 7 at 6 p.m. at McCaffree Pool. This will be the first time this season that the women's team has competed without the men since the meet at Notre Dame on Oct. 3.
"I feel good going into this weekend," said head coach Matt Gianiodis. "Toledo is a really good team. I think we match up well against them. It will be interesting to see how our girls react to coming off that two-day competition."
LAST TIME OUT
The women's team fell in two hard fought battles last weekend at Buffalo. The Spartans fell to Buffalo 173-142; and Army, 179.5-173.5.
Senior Shelby Lacy notched the first victory of the night for the women in the 100 breaststroke. Lacy clocked in at 1:05.45. Sophomore Kennedy Cutler took third (1:06.65) and junior Marina Borri finished fourth (1:06.82).
Junior Elizabeth Brown won the 200 butterfly, finishing with a time of 2:04.31. Senior Hannah Pugh finished in third place, clocking in at 2:07.37.
Freshman Chanel Bonin took first place in the women's 200 backstroke. Bonin finished with a time of 2:05.88.
The Spartans found success on the boards again in Buffalo. In the 3-meter, sophomore Madeline Sewell took first with a score of 313.95. Senior Cristee Cordes finished in second with a score of 280.70. The Spartan women took the top three scores in the 1-meter competition. Senior Alison Menzies took first place with a score of 262.25. Sewell was second place (252.90) and Cordes finished in third place (238.35).
THE LONG AND WINDING RHODES
Senior David Zoltowski was named a finalist for the Rhodes Scholarship. The Spartan captain is trying to become the 17th Michigan State student to be honored with the prestigious scholarship and the first Spartan athlete to be honored since Molly Brennan in 1982.
TALKING TOLEDO
The Rockets come to East Lansing with a 1-1 record on the year. Toledo started the season off with a 141-121 victory at Duquesne. The Rockets then fell to their Mid-American Conference foe, Eastern Michigan, 197-103. The Rockets are led by senior Maria Bargardi who broke a Duquesne pool record earlier this season in the 200 backstroke. On the boards, Toledo is led by senior Allison Belcher who took first place in the 3-meter diving and second in the 1-meter diving against Eastern Michigan.
"They have a lot of really good swimmers at Toledo," said Gianiodis. "Chris Peters is a really good coach; he was an assistant at Ohio State for a long time. Their team is good and they are a very good MAC team."
