
Men's Swimming and Diving Wins Northwestern TYR Invitational

EVANSTON, Ill. - The Michigan State men's swimming and diving team finished in first place at the Northwestern TYR Invitational, which concluded Sunday. The Spartans compiled a score of 1,350 points to win the event for the first time since 2009. The women's team finished in second place with 856 points. Combined, Michigan State finished in first place of 14 of the 48 events on the weekend. The Spartans finished the weekend with 20 new times in the top-10 all-time fastest times, including two new school records.
"The number one goal this weekend was to see where we are as a team," said head coach Matt Gianiodis. "I feel we did really well this weekend. We saw that we have the potential to be really good team. It is also cool seeing records set; it gives the kids something to focus on for the season."
Junior Jacob Moore tallied the Spartans' first victory of the afternoon in the 50 butterfly. Moore finished with a time of 21.97. He also finished the preliminary round with the day's fastest time of 21.96.
Michigan State finished with the two fastest times in the men's 200 breaststroke. Sophomore Alec Kandt continued his winning ways, taking first place with a 2:00.56 finish. Junior Ian Rodriguez finished in second place with a time of 2:02.94. Junior Marina Borri earned her a provisional time in the women's 200 breaststroke. She finished with a time of 2:15.39.
In the men's 1650 freestyle, Jon Burke earned a NCAA provisional cut with a time of 15:25.97. He finished second to Northwestern's Jordan Wilimovsky.
In the men's 200 butterfly finals, junior Nate Weeks finished with the fastest time, finishing at 1:49.31. That is ninth-fastest time in school history in the 200 butterfly.
Freshman Chanel Bonin recorded the fastest time in the women's 50 backstroke preliminary round. Bonin clocked in at 25.29.
The Spartans return back to action as a team on Jan. 8, 2015. The team will travel to Purdue for a three-day meet against the Boilermakers.
