MINNEAPOLIS - The Michigan State wrestling team fell to second-ranked Minnesota, 36-3, in the Big Ten opener Friday night at the Sports Pavilion.
Red-shirt freshman Mitch Rogaliner, making his first career start in a Big Ten dual, got things started for the Spartans (2-2) with a 7-5 decision over Jordan Bremer at 125 pounds. With the win, Rogaliner improved to 7-2 on the season.
In a matchup of ranked wrestlers at 133 pounds, No. 2 Chris Dardanes recorded a 10-4 decision over No. 16 Javier Gasca. Gasca, who burst into the national rankings after beating two top-20 wrestlers at the Eastern Michigan Duals last weekend, hung with the fifth-year senior Dardanes, trailing 2-0 after the first period. Dardanes built a 5-1 lead after two periods and eventually took home the 10-4 win.
The Gophers (4-0) used a pin by third-ranked Nick Dardanes over Garth Yenter at 141 with just one second remaining in the first period to take a 9-3 lead, and led 16-3 going into intermission following Seth Lange's 7-2 decision over Nick Trimble at 149 and No. 1 Dylan Ness' 9-1 major over Roger Wildmo at 157.
At 165, Ryan Watts led No. 15 Nick Wanzek after two periods, 3-1, but Wanzek notched a quick escape to start the third, then recorded a takedown and added riding time to come away with the 5-3 victory.
Top-ranked Logan Storley defeated Nick Proctor by technical fall at 174 pounds, and 14th-ranked Brett Pfarr recorded a 6-2 decision over John Rizqallah at 184.
In the final two matches of the dual, No. 1 Scott Schiller pinned Nick McDiarmid at 197 and No. 20 Michael Kroells beat Luke Jones, 7-2, at heavyweight.
