
Men's Swimming & Diving To Face Irish

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's swimming and diving team hosts a non-conference meet Friday against Notre Dame at McCaffree Pool. The men have started the year off with a 4-1 record, tying their best start since the 2011-12 season.
"I feel pretty good going into this weekend," said head coach Matt Gianiodis. "We are looking at this weekend in two phases. The first part will be Notre Dame, the second will be to prepare for next weekend at Northwestern to establish some good swims for the first half of the year."
LAST TIME OUT
The men's team notched two victories two weekends ago in Buffalo.The Spartans defeated Buffalo, 185-130, and Army, 188.5-164.5.
The men's 400 medley relay took first place against Buffalo and Army. The team of freshman Alex Trompke, sophomore Alec Kandt, junior Nate Weeks, and freshman Lachie McLeish finished with a time of 3:22.85.
The Spartan men took first in the men's 400 freestyle medley. The team of senior Kyle Workman, McLeish, Trompke, and freshman Nick Leshok finished with a time of 3:36.84.
In the men's 100 butterfly, Trompke came away victorious. Trompke clocked in with a time of 49.32. He also won the 100 backstroke with a time of 50.54.
Freshman Joe Szczupakiewicz took home a first-place finish in the 500 freestyle. Szczupakiewicz finished with a time of 4:37.69. Sophomore Jon Burke took third place with a time of 4:40.09. Szczupakiewicz also came away victorious in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 9:32.53.
In the men's 200 butterfly, Weeks won with a time of 1:52.71. Freshman Alex Duffy took third with a time of 1:53.90.
Sophomore Brennan LaBar won the men's 1-meter event, with a score of 317.10.
SHOOTING DOWN THE ROCKETS
The Michigan State women's swimming & diving team defeated the Toledo Rockets last Friday, 187-110. The Spartans finished the night winners of 11 of 16 events.
ON THE RHODES AGAIN
Michigan State swimming and diving senior David Zoltowski has been named a finalist for the Rhodes Scholarship. The Spartan captain is trying to become the 17th Michigan State student to be honored with the prestigious scholarship and the first Spartan student-athlete to be honored since Molly Brennan in 1982.
NOTES ON NOTRE DAME
The Irish come into East Lansing with a 2-2 record on the year. Notre Dame is coming off of a home tri-meet against Pittsburgh and Virginia Tech, where the Irish defeated Pittsburgh, but fell to Virginia Tech. The Irish are led on the boards by sophomore Joe Coumos. Coumos took first place against Georgia Tech and South Carolina earlier in the season. Senior John Williamson leads the Irish in the pool. Williamson holds the school record in the 200 butterfly.
"Notre Dame swam really well last weekend and they have a really nice team," said Gianiodis. "It's the first time that Matt has taken over by himself. I really thought they swam well last weekend. They are really good and they should be a challenge for our team."
NEXT UP
MSU will return to action on Friday, Nov. 21 in Evanston, Illinois, for the three-day TYR Northwestern Invite. The meet will begin at 9 a.m. on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
