Spartans Finish Competition at Buffalo

Nov. 1, 2014 BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Spartans finished competition Saturday at the University of Buffalo. MSU tallied six victories on the afternoon and 14 victories total on the weekend. On the men's side, the Spartans defeated Buffalo, 185-130, and Army, 188.5-164.5. The women's team fell to Buffalo 173-142 and Army, 179.5-173.5. The men's team improves to 4-1 on the season and the women's team moves to 2-4.
"We had a solid performance this weekend," said head coach Matt Gianiodis. "Both Buffalo and Army competed very hard this weekend. I am happy that we performed well."
The Spartans started the day off in winning style, taking first place in the men's 400 medley relay. The team of freshman Alex Trompke, sophomore Alec Kandt, junior Nate Weeks, and freshman Lachie McLeish finished with a time of 3:22.85.
Freshman Chanel Bonin took first place in the women's 200 backstroke. Bonin finished with a time of 2:05.88. In the men's 200 backstroke, sophomore Sam Hiller took first place with a time of 1:51.78.
In the men's 100 butterfly, freshman Alex Trompke came away victorious. Trompke clocked in with a time of 49.32. He also won the 100 breaststroke last night.
The Spartan women took the top three scores in the 1-meter competition. Senior Alison Menzies took first place with a score of 262.25. Sophomore Madeline Sewell took second place (252.90) and senior Cristee Cordes finished in third place (238.35).
Freshman Joe Szczupakiewicz took first place finish in the 500 freestyle. Szczupakiewicz finished with a time of 4:37.69. Sophomore Jon Burke took third place with a time of 4:40.09.
The Spartans return back to action on Friday at 6 p.m. as the women's team faces Toledo in East Lansing. The men will face Notre Dame at home on Nov. 14.
