Spartans Compete In First Day of Competition at Buffalo

Oct. 31, 2014 BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Spartans finished the first day of competition at the University of Buffalo with eight victories. On the men's side, the Spartans lead Buffalo, 93-74 and Army, 88.5-78.5. The women's team trails Buffalo 87-80 and Army, 91-76.
"We were okay today," said head coach Matt Gianiodis. "Getting off the bus like we did was tough. We have nine events tomorrow and we should be fresher."
Freshman Joe Szczupakiewicz started off the night taking a first place finish in the 1000 freestyle. Szczupakiewicz finished with a time of 9:32.53. Sophomore Jon Burke took third place with a time of 9:36.11.
Freshman Alex Trompke took first place in the 100 backstroke with a time of 50.54.
In the 200 freestyle, freshman Lachie McLeish continued his winning ways in the 200, taking first place at 1:39.82.
Senior Shelby Lacy notched the first victory of the night for the women in the 100 breaststroke. Lacy clocked in at 1:05.45. Sophomore Kennedy Cutler took third (1:06.65) and junior Marina Borri took fourth (1:06.82).
Junior Elizabeth Brown won the 200 butterfly, finishing with a time of 2:04.31. Senior Hannah Pugh finished in third place, clocking in at 2:07.37.
In the men's 200 butterfly, junior Nate Weeks won with a time of 1:52.71. Freshman Alex Duffy took third with a time of 1:53.90.
The Spartans found success on the boards again on Friday night. Sophomore Brennan LaBar won the men's 1-meter event, with a score of 317.10. Sophomore Madeline Sewell took first in the women's 3-meter event with a score of 313.95. Senior Cristee Cordes finished in second with a score of 280.70.
The Spartans return back to action tomorrow at noon against Buffalo and Army.
