
Women's Swimming & Diving Falls to Notre Dame

Oct. 3, 2014 SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Michigan State women's swimming and diving team dropped a 182-118 decision to Notre Dame on Friday night. The Spartans finished the night coming away victorious in five events.
"Our divers did pretty well tonight, it's just so early in the season to tell," said head coach Matt Gianiodis. "We did a pretty nice job tonight, but we have a long ways to go."
The Spartans started off the night taking third-place in the 200 Medley Relay with the team of sophomore Lauren Kalwasinski, sophomore Kennedy Cutler, junior Elizabeth Brown and freshman Racheal Bukowski, with a time of 1:51.00.
Senior Becca Berman notched the first victory of the evening for MSU in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:17.42. Junior Chelsea Abbott took second place, clocking in at 10:30.57.
Berman was victorious in the 500 freestyle finishing in 5:08.44. Freshman Haley Kornburger took second place with 5:09.77.
"I was very impressed with Becca Berman," said Gianiodis. "She was very consistent, which is something she has been working on her entire career. I am really happy for her, she works really hard."
On the boards, senior Alison Menzies took second-place at 1-meter event with a score of 276.60. That score qualified Menzies for the 2015 NCAA Zone Diving Championships. Fellow senior Madeline Sewell took third place at 3-meter event with a score of 278.33.
Sophomore Sarah Love finished in first-place in the 100 fly, clocking in at 56.74.
In the 200 IM, Michigan State took four of the top five places. Brown took first with (2:11.20), freshman Mia Baric took third place (2:13.68), redshirt-freshman Nicole Chapko in fourth (2:13.76) and freshman Beatrix Panitz fifth with a time of 2:14.50.
The Spartans finished off the night taking first-place points in the 400 freestyle relay. The team of senior Shelby Lacy, Cutler, junior Emily Parsons and Bukowski finished with 3:37.16.
The Spartans return to action next Saturday as they host Denison and Grand Valley. The meet is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. at the IM West Outdoor Pool.
