"All credit goes to Northwestern today," said MSU head coach Tom Saxton. "We weren't able to generate many chances. I think we defended well but I think they did a really good job of handling our personality players up front."
After a scoreless first 44 minutes, Northwestern midfielder Maria Gryglesk snuck one past Clem in the 45th minute to take the lead heading into half time. Heading into the contest Michigan State was 1-5-0 when allowing the first goal.
Northwestern padded their lead in the 63rd minute when Nandi Mehta netted her first goal of the season off of a set piece to make it 2-0.
The Spartans made a late push, forcing consecutive corner kicks, but were unable to put one past the Wildcats keeper.
With the loss the Spartans remain 10th in conference standings with one game remaining on the schedule.
Michigan State will finish up its regular season slate Friday when it makes the trip to Bloomington, Indiana to take on the Hoosiers. Indiana is currently 2-9-1 in the Big Ten and 6-11-1 overall. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Armstrong Stadium.
"We're trying to get double digit wins for our seniors," said Saxton. "We're going to go down there and give our best effort."
