Women's Tennis Falls to Minnesota, 5-2

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team (8-5, 0-2 Big Ten) suffered its second conference loss to No. 26 Minnesota, by a score of 5-2. The Spartans' two points of the match came off of singles victories by sophomore Katarina Lingl and redshirt Dana Guentert. Lingl is now a team-best 10-3 in singles play while Guentert improved to 5-2.
Even though they only won two singles matches, the Spartans had a great showing in all six singles matches. Lingl recorded her tenth singles win for the Green and White on court five with a 6-1, 7-6 victory over Julia Courter.
Guentert was able to edge Aria Lambert on court three in three sets. Falling in her first set 2-6, Guentert was able to come back strong and top Lambert, 7-6, 7-6 in the next two.
Sophomore Olga Chernova won her first match at the No. 1 spot against Natallia Pintusava, but fell in the next two, 6-2, 6-3. Sophomore Marina Bohrer dropped Tereza Brichavoa at the No. 3 position in the first set 7-5. She then lost 6-4 in the second and dropped the tiebreaker, 10-7. No. 116 Alex Palen defeated junior Nicole Herzog on court two, 6-2, 6-1. Junior Michaela Silesova also fell in her match to Doron Muravnik by a score of 6-4, 7-5.
The Spartans started off the match losing the doubles point, but recorded a victory on court three. Guentert and freshman Julianne Gruber recorded their third victory together at the No. 3 position, dropping Brichavoca and Courter, 8-5.
On court one, Herzog and Lingl fought hard, but fell to Pintusava and Wiecha, 8-6. Muravnik and Palen topped Bohrer and Silesova, 8-1.
The Spartans continue Big Ten play when they take on Wisconsin tomorrow at 11 a.m. at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
