Jarzen Leads Spartans at Day 3 of Big Ten Championships

MSU started off the day in the 200 yard 200 yard freestyle relay. The squad of Bryan Williams, Sam Schulze, Josh Geschwendt, and Nick McGowan clocked in with a 1:20.75 to give them a ninth-place finish and cutting their seed time by over a second.
Nick Roberts continued MSU's success, posting a 20th place effort in the 400 yard IM finals with a time of 3:55.74. He sliced nearly three seconds off of his preliminary race effort and over five seconds off of his season personal best.
But perhaps the Spartans strongest showing came in the 100-yard butterfly, with four Spartans placing in the top 24. Jarzen led the pack, swimming to a fourth-place finish and clocking in with a time of 46.42 - almost a full second faster than his previous season best. Geschwendt followed just behind in 15th with a 48.73 time and Williams came in 17th (48.08) and Kyle Workman in 24th (49.67) to round out the pack.
In the 200 freestyle, Pat Falconer finished with a 14th-place effort in a time of 1:37.09.
Senior Cameron Bartlett posted a season team-best time of 56.34 to finish in 24th place.
MSU had another quartet place in the finals of the 100 backstroke. Jarzen, who has led the team throughout the entire season in this event, improved his season-best with a 48.24 effort to put him in 13th place. Sophomore Michael Uggeri improved his season personal-best by nearly three seconds with a time of 49.98 to finish in 21st. The duo of McGowan and Schulze rounded out the finals with a 23rd and 24th place effort, respectively. McGown clocked in at 50.22 and Schulze at 51.10.
In diving, Brian Akers posted a 246.55 in the three-meter competition.
The final day of the championships wraps up on Saturday, Feb. 25. Preliminaries are set for the morning, followed by finals in the evening and the awards ceremony at the conclusion. Check the live stats link for all of the up-to-date scores and finishes.
