East Lansing, Mich. - Michigan State lost to No. 4 Penn State, 5-1, on Friday evening in State College, Pa. The Spartans extend their winless streak to five games, falling to 8-7-2 on the year and 2-6-1 in Big Ten play. Penn State improves to 9-0 in conference play and sits atop the Big Ten, poised to repeat as Big Ten Champions.
"We came out strong and played a competitive game against a great team," said head coach Tom Saxon. "We stayed strong and made it 2-1 early in the second half. After Penn State scored their third goal we changed things up, and took some risks. To their credit, they took advantage as great teams will do."
The Spartans lone goal came in the 57th minute, and at the time cut the Penn State lead to 2-1. Paige Wester converted on a two-on-one break on a pass from Olivia Stander for her third goal of the year. The assist is Stander's ninth on the year and 23rd of her career, moving her into second all-time for assists in a career at MSU.
The Nitany Lions responded by rattling off three unanswered goals in the remaining 30 minutes of the second half to secure the victory.
The Spartans were outshot 21-11 and Penn State held a 4-2 edge in corners.
Courtney Clem made four saves in 69 minutes before redshirt freshman Gabrielle Garuder made her first career appearance.
Michigan State continues its weekend road trip on Sunday when it travels to Columbus to take on Ohio State at 1 p.m.
