Women's Tennis Competes in First Day of Wildcat Invitational

EVANSTON, Ill. - The Michigan State women's tennis team wrapped up its first day at the Wildcat Invitational on Friday. Due to inclement weather, only doubles matches were played. The Spartans tallied two doubles victories on day one.
Sophomore Katarina Lingl and freshman Julianne Gruber kicked off the day in Flight B Doubles with an 8-1 win over McCulloch and Zordani of Iowa. They then suffered an 8-4 loss to Simonetti and Hricistova of Illinois-Chicago and a close 9-8 match to Pereira and Guzairova of South Carolina.
Also competing in Flight B Doubles was freshman Hilary Hager and sophomore Jennifer Yen. In the opening round, the pairing was topped by Iowa's Talcott and Majercik, 8-5. Yen and Hager dropped their second match to Gruber and Bauer of Wisconsin, 8-1. But they bounced back with a decisive 8-1 victory over Courtner and Muravnik of Minnesota to complete doubles play.
In Flight A Doubles, junior Amy Barton and Olga Chernova opened up the tournament with a loss to Lambropoulus and Jamieson of Illinois, 8-3. The duo then played two tough matches against McKnight and Newmann of DePaul and Markovic and Leobel of Wisconsin with close 8-5, 8-6 losses.
The Spartans return to action tomorrow at the Wildcat invitational, competing in singles play. The invite will resume at 9 a.m.
