Final Results
"We were a little disappointed with how we handled the day, but were happy with the overall results and progress we made from last week," said first-year Spartan head coach Casey Lubahn. "I'm especially excited about the fact that I didn't think our guys were are as sharp as they could be, but still found a way to score well. I saw a ton of upside with these guys. Chris Mory, Dan Ellis and Matthew Moseley were strong all week, and Matthew was especially key for us today.
"Going forward, we need to put in more work on the short game, and do a better job of listening, learning and putting new things into play. Piece-by-piece, day-by-day, we will continue to improve and push ourselves to succeed."
Michigan State trailed only California and Baylor in the final leaderboard. The Bears, a top-25 program in the GCAA preseason poll, shot a 13-under par 839 to top the field by 12 shots. Host and in-state rival Michigan tied for sixth at 15-over par 867.
Following last week's second place finish at the Fossum Invitational, it was the first time since 2004-05 that the Spartans have finished in the top-3 in each of their first two events.
Seniors Dan Ellis and Chris Mory, and junior Matthew Moseley all placed in the top-10 for the Spartans, in addition to all setting new career 54-hole low scores.
Ellis led the MSU effort, tying for fifth at 2-under par 211 (70-66-75). It was his second straight top-5 finish, after previously never placing in the top-10 in his first three seasons at MSU. Ellis tied for the tournament best score on the par-3s this week, shooting 1-under. Also, Ellis and Mory tied for the team-lead, and were second in the field, with 13 birdies.
Mory and Moseley were among a group tied for eighth at 1-under par 211. Mory (70-68-74) posted his third-straight top-5 showing, and his fourth in his last six events. Moseley (72-71-69), who shot the low score of the day for the Spartans with a career-low 69, had his third career top-10 finish.
Rounding out the MSU lineup, freshman McCormick Clouser tied for 25th at 5-over par 218 (73-71-74) and senior Dave Ellis tied for 45th at 13-over 226 (78-71-77).
After two weeks off from competition, the Spartans return to the links on Sept. 26-27 for the Inverness Intercollegiate in Toledo, Ohio.
