Spartan Gymnastics Receives NACGC/W Academic Honors

EAST LANSING, Mich. - As announced by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women (NACGC/W), the Michigan State gymnastics program was recognized for having the eighth-highest grade point average (GPA) in the nation this year with a 3.5494 composite team mark. In addition, nine Spartan gymnasts were named Scholar All-Americans for having a GPA of 3.5 or better during the 2010-11 academic year.
Leading the team with a 4.0 GPA for the year was Megan Bergland, her fifth time on the NACGC/W list. Bergland was one of 71 student-athletes to boast 4.0 GPAs for the 2010-11 school year. Making fourth appearance on the list was senior Kelsey Morley while junior Selina Rodriguez was a third-time recipient. Senior Kathryn Mahoney and juniors Alyssa Brennan and Daneen Haba appear for their second time, while freshman Sarena Bumbarger, Kelsey Mazur and Alex Pace earn the award for their first time.
With this year's total, head coach Kathie Klages has now posted 104 student-athletes on the NACGC/W Scholar-Americans list over her 21 years at the helm of the Green and White.
The Spartans are second Big Ten Conference with nine Scholar All-Americans. Ohio State led the league with 10 while Michigan and Iowa each had seven. Minnesota had six and Illinois posted five individuals. In total, 44 student-athletes from the conference were honored
Southeast Missouri State earned top team honors with its 3.9118 team GPA. Southern Utah (3.8050), Utah (3.7631), Alabama (3.7094), Wisconsin-Lacrosse (3.6619), Brown (3.6093) and Eastern Michigan (3.5805) occupied positions two through seven.
