
MacLeod Wins 5,000m At Penn Relays

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State track & field team competed at the Penn Relays on Thursday, April 28 in Pennsylvania, Pa., while also continuing action at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa. Senior Emily MacLeod turned in the top performance on the day at both locations as she won the 5,000m championship division race when she clocked in a career-best 16:00.40.
Joining MacLeod in the event was junior Carlie Green, who also clocked in a top-10 performance as she was ninth in the event with a time of 16:28.31.
Sophomore Katie Haines competed in the Olympic Development Women's 5,000m run for the Spartans. Haines finished fifth in the event when she crossed in 16:40.96.
Senior Spencer Beatty finished fourth with a season-best time of 8:55.56 in the 3,000m steeplechase championship division race. Junior Aaron Simoneau followed closely behind Beatty, as he was only one-hundredth of a second behind with an 8.55.57 season-best finish. Andrew Benford of Richmond won the event with a time of 8:48.94.
In the men's 5,000m championship division, sophomore Josh McAlary was 23rd in the event with a career-best time of 14:37.20.
In Des Moines, junior Cliff Miller and sophomore Kurt Schneider entered the final day of the men's decathlon in third and fourth, respectively. Wrapping up action at the Drake Relays, Miller turned in an impressive finish of second overall as the top collegiate competitor in the event with a career-best 7,202 score. Schneider wound up dropping to ninth overall with a score of 6,641. Former Northern Iowa star Mat Clark competed unattached and won the competition with a score of 7,500 points.
Miller made a significant move in the standings as he was second in the pole vault. Miller vaulted a height of 4.85m. Schneider placed 11th in the event with a height of 3.55m.
Miller's second best individual finish occurred in the 110m hurdles as he finished third with a time of 14.89. Schneider finished the event in seventh, crossing the finish line in 15.24.
Miller placed sixth in the discus throw with a toss of 35.90m, while Schneider finished the event with a distance of 31.80m, good enough for 11th overall.
In the javelin throw, Miller placed seventh overall with a throw of 46.79m. Schneider was 11th as he posted distance of 42.94m.
Schneider's top day two finish occurred in the 1,500m run, clocking in a time of 4:46.32, good enough for fifth overall. Miller placed 10th as he clocked in at 4:53.23.
The Spartans continue action tomorrow (April 29) at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa.
