EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State men's tennis senior Clark Richardson was honored as the team's recipient of the 2011 Big Ten Sportsmanship Honoree Award, as announced by the Big Ten office on Thursday, April 28. Each year the Big Ten honors one recipient from each of its 11 schools who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, the student-athletes must be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the competition setting.
Richardson has posted an 8-4 overall record in singles play, while winning 12-of-20 doubles matches he has competed in.
Richardson's success on the court has been matched in the classroom, where he received the scholar-athlete award at the SASS Gala on April 11. The award is given annually to the member on each team with the highest cumulative GPA.
The men's tennis program was recognized as a whole when they were presented with the Athletic Director's Award, which is given to the team with the highest team grade point average after the 2010 fall semester. The Spartan tennis team concluded the semester with an impressive team GPA of 3.439. With the award, the tennis team has won it for a record seventh time, and is the fourth year in a row it has been awarded to them.
Richardson is now a candidate for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award, as the Big Ten office will honor one male and one female student-athlete from each institution at the end of the school year.
