
Track & Field Opens Indiana Invitational In Second and Third

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Michigan State track & field team opened its lone scored regular season meet of the year in Bloomington, Ind., on Saturday, April 16 at the Indiana Invitational. After seven scored events, the women currently sit in second place out of four teams with 64.50 points while the men are third with 52 points.
Host Indiana currently leads in both the men's and women's rankings with 67 and 71 points, respectively. Missouri ranks second on the men's side with 64 points while Indiana State rounds out the men's standings with 51 points. The Tigers are third in the women rankings (58) while ISU also rounds out the women's side (52.50).
Overall, the Spartans combined for three first-place finishes and four second-place marks.
Senior Emily MacLeod turned in the most impressive finish out of all competitors at the meet as she finished 1:03.07 seconds ahead of the next closest runner in the 5000m run. MacLeod's career-best best mark placed her first overall ahead of teammate sophomore Katie Haines in second. Haines finished with a season-best time of 17:09.69.
On the men's side, sophomore Codi Mattix won the pole vault with a height of 5.00m. Joining Mattix in second was freshman Derik Peterman. Peterman tied for second with a height of 4.85m.
In the team's first relay of the season, the 4x100m team of sophomore Alysson Bodenbach, senior Charelise Davis, junior Leslie Aririguzo and senior Erica Mann combined for the top time in the event. The Spartan team finished with a time of 46.84.
Senior Ashley Smith tied for third in the pole vault with a 3.85m mark. Smith's vault ties her season-best height this season. Sophomore Amanda Impellizzeri bested her career-high in the pole vault when she posted a sixth-place mark of 3.70m.
Sophomore Beth Rohl placed fourth in the women's hammer throw with a toss of 52.24m. Junior Catherine Daniels was the next best Spartan in the event as she was ninth in the event with a toss of 47.89m.
Sophomore Lonnie Pugh was the top thrower for the Green and White during day one as he placed second in the men's hammer throw. Pugh recorded a distance of 57.73m, just ahead of teammate junior Jay Gillespie in third. Gillespie followed with a 57.04m mark.
Competing as a thrower for the first time in her career, junior Theresa O'Leary placed fifth in the javelin with a personal-best toss of 32.21m. O'Leary topped classmate Bell Galvez who posted a 30.48m toss to finish seventh overall.
Gillespie posted a season-best distance in the men's javelin with a toss of 49.80m. Sophomore Kurt Schneider competed in the event for the first time in his career, posting a toss of 45.64m for fifth place.
Sophomore Jaelynn Pryor narrowly missed a first-place finish in the 400m hurdles as she clocked in 0.65 seconds behind the top runner. Pryor clocked in at 1:01.87 for second place.
Junior Carlie Green finished the 1500m run with a season-best time of 4:32.07. Green's mark was good enough for third-place overall in the event. Sophomore Kristen Smith was the second Spartan to cross in the event as she finished sixth with a time of 4:36.76.
Sophomore Josh McAlary was the top male runner in the 1500m run for MSU as he placed fourth overall in the event. Freshman Ben Miller followed as the next runner to cross as he finished fifth. McAlary clocked a time of 3:55.35 while Miller posted a career-best 3:55.60.
Junior Joe Dimambro placed fourth in the 5000m run as he finished with a season-best time of 14:55.23. Freshman Brett Burdick placed eighth overall in the event with a season-high of 15:31.31.
The Green and White close out action in Bloomington, Ind., with the final day of action at the Indiana Invitational tomorrow (April 17).
