
Women's Tennis Drops Heartbreaker to Purdue

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The No. 52 Michigan State women's tennis team was edged by Purdue, 4-3, at home in what was one of its closest matches of the season. The Spartans captured the doubles point, but fell to the Boilermakers in singles. MSU is now 11-4 on the season and 0-2 in the Big Ten.
The No. 31 doubles pair of sophomore Amy Barton and freshman Marina Bohrer dropped Mara Schmidt and Jennifer Rabot, 8-4, at No. 1 doubles. Sophomore Nicole Herzog and senior Whitney Wilson fell to Anna Dushina and Giselle Pere, 8-5, for the lone doubles loss in the No. 2 position. Rounding out the doubles play was freshman Valentina Rusakova and sophomore Michaela Silesova who downed Bavani Tirumuti and Imogen Golder, 8-2, at the No. 3 position.
At No. 1 singles, Rusakova edged Rabot, 6-4, 6-2. Bohrer won her first match against Tirumurti, 7-5, but then lost the following two, 6-4, 6-3, at the No. 2 spot. In her first match this spring, freshman Olga Chernova fell to Schmidt, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 3 singles. Wilson was almost able to fight back against Dushkina at No. 4 singles, but wound up falling, 6-3, 7-6 (6). Golder defeated Silesova, 6-2, 6-3, at the No. 5 singles position. Sophomore Dana Guentert recorded a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Pere.
The Spartans are back in action tomorrow (March 27) when they host Indiana at 11 a.m. ET. Action will take place at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
