Women's Tennis Bounces Back with Win over Indiana

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The No. 52 Michigan State women's tennis team (12-4, 1-2) captured its first Big Ten victory of the season with a win over Indiana, 4-3, on Sunday, March 27. All three doubles matches were close, but the Spartans earned the doubles point for the fifteenth time this season. Sophomore Amy Barton's 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 win over Leslie Hureau at No. 1 singles clinched the win for MSU.
Senior Whitney Wilson and sophomore Nicole Herzog fought hard for an 8-6 win over Geniya Vertesheva and Kayla Fujimoto at the No. 2 spot. Freshman Valentina Rusakova and sophomore Michaela Silesova defeated Sophie Garre and Diana Kyllman, 8-6, at the No. 3 position. The No. 31 tandem of Barton and freshman Marina Bohrer lost only their third doubles match of the season to Leslie Hureau and Myriam Sopel, 8-6. The paring is now 13-2 on the season.
Along with Barton's victory at the No. 1 singles position, Michigan State earned the win at the No. 2 spot. Rusakova defeated Vertesheva, 6-4, 6-3, to claim the point. Bohrer edged Katya Zapadalova, 6-2, 7-5, at No. 3 singles. Wilson fell to Charlotte Martin at the No. 4 position, 6-0, 7-6. Silesova also lost by the same exact score to Fujimoto at the No. 5 position, 6-0, 7-6. Sophomore Dana Guentert suffered a defeat in her No. 6 singles match against Sopel after she retired during the third set (6-7, 7-6 (5), 5-3 retired).
The Spartans continue Big Ten play next weekend when they travel to Wisconsin on Friday, April 1st at 3 p.m. to match up against the Badgers. They then visit Minnesota on Sunday, April 3rd at 11 a.m.
