
No. 49 Spartans top Detroit, Valparaiso

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's tennis team earned its first victory of the afternoon as it defeated Detroit by a score of 7-0. The Spartans took each singles match, and earned the doubles point by winning in the No. 1 and 2 spots.
The senior tandem of Jason Norville and John Stratton earned the No. 1 doubles victory by taking down Butts and Tolomei, 8-2. Freshman Drew Lied and junior Mat Nelson sealed the doubles point for MSU at the No. 2 slot with an 8-6 win over Latosinsky and Nunez. In the 3rd doubles position, sophomore Denis Bogatov and Christian Roehmer fell, 8-7 (7), to Escobar and Cheung.
Bogatov redeemed his doubles loss at No. 1 singles, where he defeated Tolomei, 5-7, 6-2 (10-4). Senior Austin Brooks earned a 7-5, 6-2 victory in the No. 2 spot over Latosinsky, while freshman Aaron Pfister earned his 10th singles victory of the season at the No. 3 spot with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Escobar. In the No. 4 spot, Nelson earned his second victory of the afternoon by defeating Cheung, 6-2, 6-3. Sophomore Christian Roehmer gave the Green and White a victory in the No. 5 spot by taking down Nunez in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, and freshman Ryan Richmond rounded out singles play at the No. 6 spot with a 3-6, 6-2, 10-4 victory over Stabley.
The Spartans earned their second win of the day by taking down the Crusaders of Valparaiso, 6-1. MSU swept all the doubles matches to earn the point, and took 5-of-6 in singles play.
Junior Ron Hulewicz represented Michigan State in the No. 1 spot, earning a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Gaspar, while Stratton defeated Baum, 6-3, 6-4, in the No. 2 slot. Brooks notched his second singles victory of the day with a 6-0, 6-3 win over DeHerrera in the No. 3 position. Nelson earned his third overall victory of the afternoon with a 6-1, 6-3 decision over Whitner at No. 4. Roehmer suffered the only Spartan loss at the No. 5 position, falling in two well-competed sets to Honert, 7-5, 6-4. Richmond earned his second victory of the afternoon at No. 6 by taking down Woodson, 6-2, 7-5.
In doubles play, Brooks and Pfister took down Gaspar and Baum, 8-2, in the No. 1 slot, while Stratton and Lied defeated Whitner and Honert in the No. 2 position by the same score (8-2). Senior Jason Norville and Richmond clinched an 8-3 victory in the No. 3 spot over DeHerrera and Stump.
The Spartans will continue action after their first week off, when they travel to Chicago, Ill., to face Depaul on Saturday, March 12 at 2 p.m.
