COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Michigan State gymnastics team returned to Big Ten dual action on Friday, Feb. 18 against Ohio State. The Spartans fell 195.200-192.675 in St. John Arena in Columbus, Ohio, and marked the first conference dual since Jan. 22. Junior Jackie Berg placed second on the uneven bars with a team-best score of 9.775.
Senior Nicole Argiros and junior Daneen Haba were the top Spartans on the vault with identical marks of 9.775 for a third-place tie. The two Spartans were joined by Casey Williamson and Taylor Jones in third. Finishing tops in the event was both Colleen Dean and Sarah Miller with scores of 9.800. The Buckeyes downed MSU in the event, 48.900 to 48.725.
Berg led MSU bars and was joined by Nicole Krauter in second. Dean's mark of 9.800 won the event overall, her second crown of the night. OSU topped the Spartans 48.500-48.475 for the apparatus.
Sophomore Shanthi Teike and freshman Sarena Bumbarger tied for second on the balance beam with scores of 9.750. The two Spartans were joined by Krauter and Miller in second. Rebecca Best led all gymnasts on the beam with a 9.800. Ohio State edged the Green and White on the beam, 48.700-47.125.
Teike was the top Spartan for the second event of the night with her score of 9.800. Dean captured her third individual win of the night with a first-place mark of 9.875. Melanie Shaffer and Jones tied for second with a 9.825 mark. The Buckeyes topped Michigan State by a score of 49.100 to 48.350.
Dean won the all-around with a score of 39.150. Joining Dean was teammate Shaffer in second with a 38.200 mark. MSU did not compete a gymnast in the all-around competition.
The Spartans return home next weekend for their final home meets of the season. MSU first faces Illinois on Friday, Feb. 25 live on the Big Ten Network in the first ever collegiate "Autism Awareness Meet". While also battling the Fighting Illini for the "Victory Plank", the Spartans welcome special guest Olympic Champion Nastia Liukin for the meet. MSU concludes its home schedule two days later when it hosts Alaska-Anchorage on Sunday, Feb. 27 on Senior Night. Both meets are scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m., inside Jenison Field House.
