EAST LANSING, Mich. - - The Michigan State swimming & diving team will host its 56th annual Alumni Meet on Saturday, Oct. 22 at McCaffree Pool at IM West. Action is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. The Alumni Meet is the second-longest event on campus during homecoming weekend, second to only the MSU football game.
The meet is a tradition that began under former head coach Charles McCaffree and the Seibold family in 1955, and has continued on without pause every homecoming.
"This is my favorite weekend of the year because I think it showcases how special our program is. The alumni, whether the graduated in 1939 of 2011 are the lifeblood of this program," said head coach Matt Gianiodis. "They donate their money, time and passion for our team year after year. This year, as we have the past 10, we also have 5 very worthy recipients of the Bill Hauser Service Award.
The Spartans kicked off their 2011-12 season earlier this month when they hosted the first outdoor meet in school history in 15 years at the MSU Invite. Both the men and women walked away with the team titles, edging out Cleveland State and Oakland. Individually, junior Jacob Jarzen and senior Sarah Clay were the Spartan's top performers. Jarzen won two individual crowns and one medley relay in the 200-meter IM, 200-meter backstroke and 400-meter medley. On the boards, Clay was the top winner in both the three-meter dive and one-meter dive, tallying scores of 301.20 and 281.75 respectively.
MSU returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 29 when they head to Iowa City to take on the Hawks and Truman State at 12 p.m.
