Final StatsEVANSTON, Ill. - The Michigan State women's tennis team completed the final day of the Wildcat Invitational at Northwestern on Sunday. The tournament coaches made the decision to only play one round of singles, which resulted in no flight champions being crowned. The Spartans notched one single victory on the last day of competition in Flight D Singles.
In Flight A Singles, junior Amy Barton was topped by Simonetti of Illinois-Chicago, 6-3, 7-6 (4) and sophomore Olga Chernova lost her match to Wiecha of Minnesota, 6-2, 6-1 in Flight B Singles. In Flight C Singles play, freshman Julianne Gruber was defeated by Tsertsuadze of Illinois-Chicago with a score of 6-0, 6-4 and sophomore Katarina Lingl was dropped by Majerick of Iowa, 7-5, 6-1.
In the Flight D Singles, Illinois-Chicago's Craig blanked freshman Julianne Gruber, 6-0, 6-0, but sophomore Jennifer Yen posted the lone singles victory for the Spartans against Renault of Minnesota, edging the Big Ten opponent in three sets 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.
The Spartans are back in action the weekend of Nov. 4-6 when they host the Green and White Invitational.
